This long handwoven rug originates from southern Tunisia, likely from the Gabès or Matmata region, an area celebrated for its Berber weaving heritage. Crafted from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural pigments such as madder root, henna, pomegranate rind, and walnut husk, the rug displays a deep, earthy palette of reds, ochres, and browns that evokes the arid landscape of the Tunisian south.

Combining flatweave (kilim) and knotted pile techniques, it reveals a rhythmic interplay between tightly woven geometric bands and richly textured sections adorned with tassels and embroidered accents. These motifs, rooted in Berber symbolism, often represent protection, fertility, and harmony.

A remarkable example of Tunisia’s vernacular craftsmanship, this piece balances utility and ornament, functioning as both a domestic textile and a sculptural decorative object.
