Originating from the Matmata region of southern Tunisia, this handwoven Berber rug exemplifies the region’s rich textile traditions. Crafted from hand-spun wool and dyed using natural pigments such as madder root, pomegranate rind, henna, and walnut husk, the rug features a deep palette of crimson, black, and ochre tones, reflecting the earthen hues of Tunisia’s desert landscape.

Woven on a traditional ground loom, it combines flatweave (kilim) and supplementary weft techniques, producing intricate geometric motifs—diamonds, crosses, and chevrons—that carry ancestral Berber symbolism associated with protection and fertility. The upper edge is adorned with hand-twisted wool tassels in alternating colors, adding a tactile and sculptural dimension to the piece.

This rug serves as both a utilitarian textile and a cultural artifact, embodying the artisanal spirit and storytelling woven into Tunisia’s rural heritage.
